Memorial Service for Beat poet Gregory Corso

Gregory Nunzio Corso
March 26, 1930 - January 17, 2001
Gregory Corso, a native New Yorker who died on January 17 at age 70, was one of the last major 1950’s Beat poets. Together with his friends Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs and Herbert Huncke, he helped change the face not only of American literature, but of American society as well.
The family and friends of Gregory will be holding a celebratory tribute in honor of the man, his work, and his infectious and mischievous spirit on March 11, 2001. The memorial service is free-of-charge and open to the public and all are invited to attend.
The service will include readings of Gregory’s work, personal remembrances, original poetry and musical performances. Some of those participating include Patti Smith, Debbie Harry, Peter Orlovsky, Ed Sanders, David Amram, Martin Matz, Maggie Estep, Edgar Oliver, and many others.
Gregory, whose funeral service was at Our Lady of Pompeii Church in Greenwich Village, is to be buried this May in Rome alongside two of his favorite poets, Percy Blysshe Shelley and John Keats. This will be his New York City farewell.
