ArtCall Diary - Entry 5/03/2000
Music to the Eyes
God's Symbol on the Soup Nazi's Kiosk

Painting of Quentin Crisp by Charlene Lanzel
The day wasn't 'crisp' at all. Things were beginning to run late on the corner of Prince and Mercer. You could not tell if the gods were staring at you, or whether they were in fact winking at you. But just at the last moment Richard Gins did show up, and the day's ArtCall events were underway. Because he was late, we made at date for later that evening, and we'll get to that later on in this report.

So finally we were off to the Gershwin Hotel, on 27th and 5th for the bi-weekly art shindig. These affairs are curated by Jacob Mikkelsen, who emigrated from Denmark. This phat event featured the art of Charlene Lanzel, and the launch of tuesdae.com, a flash website that puts the 007 opening credits to shame. The website was demonstrated by drag king and techno geek, Jonathan Milott of Agenda, with a showman's laptop and a magic marker mustache. Several popular Tuesdae tunes can be found in mp3 format, if you dig deep enough into her site.

Charlene's work had a very 'tart' appeal, as all of the works had Sweet Tarts in them. We grabbed a sample off the wall for your enjoyment. It looked pretty tasty, as well. Handed to us was the CD demo of the evening - mimeo.com is their name, document delivery is their game. The party was well attended with close to 400 in attendance. Baird Jones remarked that this was typical for a Gershwin opening party.

Taylor Mead
So before sliding back to Max Fish, for a shirley temple nitecap with Taylor Meade to round out the evening, we went over to Richard Gins' Red Hook studio. We got jiggy with it over his latest works and his upcoming book signing. Don't miss the signing party at the Transit Museum Store on Jay St., Saturday, May 6th, from 2-5pm. After the signing we will blast off to the local OTB for Derby Day thrills (there is no ArtCall consensus pick just yet). Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Jerome Foundation's ForeCast Public Art Fund program decided that the 'biggest ArtCall to date' the Red Spot Outdoor Slide Theater was worth a look at. If we could give them some facts and figures about how much it would actually cost to digitize all of the 125,000 slides in the collection. ArtCall has the tentative online rights to present the entire Red Spot collection.
