ArtCall Diary - Entry 6/09/2000
Tasty Performance Pudding

"I want my... I want my... I want my MTV," moaned Dire Straights from the radio. ArtCall however, sings a different tune, "We want our... we want our...  own streaming video." For all the tapes that were getting shipped to NYC from Little Margie's pad out in LA, for a live Wide Open Cabaret, for KDDDS to be delivered underground culture straight to his Kansas home, for the spycams over the ArtCall HQ royal throne and for live shots of Paul Kostabi in the act of 'doing the latest best and greatest he's ever done'. Can you tell that the Streaming Media East 2000 show at the New York Hilton Monday through Wednesday is now our latest obsession.

Ray of Ray's News - Knows a cyber fiend when he sees one!
A horror story hit the Daily News about a cyber fiend. Ray gave me a heads up on the headline, right away. I felt like a suspect with my new digital camera, but kidnapping and murder are just not in our M.O. "I want my... I want my... I want my streaming video." Jim Powers, the mosaic man was on the Avenue, doing his no heroin rant to anyone who would listen. A passing car radio revealed, that the New Jersey Devils had lost in overtime to the Dallas Stars, one to nothing. It was then off to A & A Bagel for a triple egg sandwich 'that could not be beat'.

Getting to sleep was kinda hard with all that coffee in me. I finally drifted off around 10 am and Clayton came by around 1:30 pm. I didn't realize it was the door, it sounded like the phone. Then someone called on the phone and they sounded like the door, oh well. Hours later I woke up and took a quick sponge bath (not that one needs it to play No ABC No Rio Gallery and yeah we don't have a shower), printed out all the recent artcall entries for the portfolio and had a cup of coffee.

Hustling off to ABC No Rio on Rivington Street, I got there to find a sparse crowd. Matthew was in this hat that looked like mine! He was riding herd on the critters there. I was totally thrown off-stride at the thin turnout, craving much love and admiration during one of my performances, and there was no time to gather my thoughts and prepare Elevator Pitch #314. I missed Billy Syndrome as he had declared, "It ain't here!" and went back to Willyburg. Orion Feig had already read and it seemed half the crowd was tourists (is this what my ArtCall diary entries are doing?). It was a bit warm in the tiny performance space and I was glad I'd brought my little hand fan.

Dennis - Someone who has been around the block a time or twoDoug Colera - 23rd Street, isn't the Chelsea Hotel there?I thought the Lexus-Nexus coalition was in Berkeley?
After Matthew did a poetry by audience participation number and had gotten everyone to reveal their true astrological signs, Dennis took center stage and revealed The Seven Golden Rules of Hustling. Rule #1, always get the money up front. Doug Colera then did a recitation about Life on 23rd Street. Do hustlers work there? Lexus, who was in from Virginia, incited the throng with a piece titled Direct Action.
Debby Stein and Robin Goldsmith in a light hearted moment on the No Rio Stage
Finnegan read situational poetry, inspired by his escape from Creedmore to the San Fernando Valley area in California. Debby Stein did some original material that kept the audience laughing. Robin Goldsmith reported on the state of the No Rio Capital Improvement Fund. The dollar figure for the fund is now around $90,000. It is in the last crucial $10,000 to raise stage, that is important for getting No Rio matching funds from private foundations. She also wanted it on the record that, "We do NOT own the building yet. We only have a Letter of Intent from the City." September is the make or break date for No Rio.

As the cabaret wound itself down, the stage was swept up and some said, "Deepdale Gallery was on." Off we all journeyed, arriving well past the opening peak, but life still abounded in the gallery. Gallery artist, Linus Corragio greeted us all with news of his landing a big commission work, in a midtown office building. He also wants ArtCall to make him a web site for his sculptural works. Gecko was ecstatic about her performance collective getting a Defense Department contract. The contract involves performances about black box recordings, from six different plane crashes.

Back in the ABC gallery, Matthew Courtney was inspecting the father and son works of John and Anthony Zito. "Tasty!", Courtney pronounced to the crowd. We could see that Matthew was just eating up the work. Part two of this fine exhibition continues July 7th.

New York's finest paid a couple of visits to the throng outside the gallery, prompting the crowd to begin to thin its ranks and head to Mars Bar for after-opening refreshment. No Rio star, Ed Hush reported he is moving back from Queens and is now in the dreaded search for Manhattan real estate. Matthew also enlightened us that he had moved to the Times Square area. It's good to see Courtney back on dry land.

Ed Hush - At Deepdale Gallery 6/9/00 - After great No Rio performanceAs a hush came over the gallery crowd, it was time to work our way home. A roundup at The Pink Pony yielded none of the usual suspects and at Ray's News there wasn't any news in the news. Too bad HQ does not have a kitchen, (yes no shower and no kitchen) or I would have made some instant puddin'. Postponed is the ArtCall consensus choice to win the Belmont Stakes, Saturday. Maybe later, we can get some 'sub-culture' and investigate some of David Huberman's 'theories' about the current state of Jennifer Blowdryer's blown fuse. "I want my... I want my... I want my... I want my own streaming video!"
